Renewing a French residence permit is less stressful when you start with the document you already hold. A visitor card, student card, employee card, talent passport, family permit and ten-year resident card each have their own renewal route and evidence. The safest approach is to check the instructions attached to your permit and the website of your département’s prefecture before the expiry date.
Start with the right renewal route
Many applications are submitted through the Administration numérique pour les étrangers en France (ANEF). The online service is used for a number of renewals, changes of situation and applications for long-term cards. Other categories still require an appointment or filing process set by the prefecture or sub-prefecture. A prefecture may also publish local instructions about scans, translations, photographs and collection appointments, so do not rely on a checklist from another département.
Check the exact wording on your current visa or card first. A VLS-TS may need validation during the first year; a temporary card normally leads to a renewal of the same status; and a multi-year card may have different evidence from the first application. If your circumstances have changed, you may need a change-of-status application rather than a simple renewal.
When should you apply?
Do not wait for the card to expire. Several Service-Public procedures use a filing window of no earlier than four months and no later than two months before the end of the visa, VLS-TS or residence card. Employee renewals commonly require filing no later than two months before expiry. The applicable window depends on the category, so confirm the dates shown in the official instructions for your permit.
Submitting early gives you time to correct a rejected scan, obtain a missing civil-status document or respond to a request from the prefecture. Save the submission confirmation, application number and every message in your ANEF account.
Core documents to prepare
Although the exact list varies, most renewals ask for:
- your passport or other accepted identity document;
- the front and back of your current residence card or visa;
- proof of your address in France dated within the required period;
- an approved e-photo code or photographs, depending on the filing route;
- proof of your current situation, such as an employment contract and payslips, enrolment and attendance records, family documents or evidence of sufficient resources;
- health-insurance evidence where the category requires it; and
- translations, legalisation or apostille for foreign civil-status documents when requested.
Upload clear, complete documents. Combine pages in the order requested, keep file sizes within the portal limit and use filenames that make the document obvious. If a document is not available, explain why rather than uploading an unrelated file.
Employment and talent renewals
An employee renewing on the same job should be ready to show that the employment continues. Service-Public may request employer declarations, recent payslips, an employment certificate or evidence connected with France Travail if the contract ended. A change of employer, occupation or salary can alter the route and may require a new work-authorisation step.
Talent passport holders should check that their role, salary, employer and project still satisfy the relevant talent category. A researcher, highly qualified employee, company representative and innovative-business founder do not all use the same supporting evidence. If your original project has changed, describe the change in the application and obtain specialist advice before filing.
Students and family members
Students generally need current enrolment, academic progression and sufficient-resources evidence. Keep certificates of enrolment, transcripts and proof of accommodation available. If you have completed your course and want to work in France, investigate the post-study route before submitting a routine student renewal.
Family permits depend on the relationship and the sponsor’s status. A marriage, divorce, birth, death, change in custody or change in the sponsor’s permit can affect the correct category. Include updated civil-status documents and explain any material change in a short cover note.
What happens after submission?
ANEF may issue a confirmation or an attestation while the application is examined. Read its dates and conditions carefully; an acknowledgement of submission is not always proof that you can work or travel. The prefecture may request an appointment, fingerprints, an original document or additional evidence. Respond through the stated channel and keep screenshots or PDF copies of every exchange.
If your card expires while the application is pending, check what document proves your continued right to stay and whether it preserves your work rights. Before travelling outside France, obtain current advice about re-entry. An expired card plus a simple submission receipt may not be enough for every border or airline situation.
Long-term and permanent residence
Renewing a temporary card is different from applying for a ten-year resident card. Under the Service-Public guidance on the long-term resident-EU card, many non-EU nationals may qualify after five years of regular, continuous residence, subject to conditions such as resources, health insurance and integration. The card is valid for ten years and renewable, but absences and the type of previous permits matter.
At renewal of a ten-year resident card, you may also be able to request a permanent resident card. This is a separate decision from simply replacing an expiring card. Check the official eligibility rules and the evidence required for your situation before selecting the application type in ANEF.
A practical renewal checklist
- Photograph both sides of your current permit and note its expiry date.
- Identify the exact category and whether the application is renewal, change of status or long-term residence.
- Check ANEF and your prefecture for the current filing window and local instructions.
- Gather identity, address, status, insurance and civil-status evidence.
- Submit early, save the confirmation and monitor messages.
- Do not travel or change jobs while relying on an unclear receipt; confirm the effect first.
