Imlil is the High Atlas trekking village just a couple of hours from Marrakech — the main gateway to Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. For expats it's the easiest mountain escape from the city: cool air, walking trails, and Berber villages, doable as a day trip or a weekend.
What you're looking at
Set at around 1,800 m, Imlil is a small village of guesthouses, mule tracks, and walnut groves. From here you can do everything from gentle valley walks (to the waterfalls, Armed, or Aroumd) up to the serious two-day trek to Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m). It's a genuine change of climate and pace from Marrakech.
Getting there from Marrakech
It's about 64 km, roughly 1.5 hours:

There's no train or direct bus; buses run to Asni, then a taxi covers the last stretch.
Good to know
- Bring warm layers — it's much cooler than the city, and cold in winter.
- The Toubkal summit trek requires a licensed mountain guide.
- Day trips work, but an overnight lets you actually walk.
- Check the mountain forecast before heading up.
