iSimangaliso Wetland Park is a 220 km stretch of wild KwaZulu-Natal coast — lakes, wetlands, beaches, and reefs rolled into one protected area. It was South Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage Site (1999), and for expats it's an easy, uncrowded weekend from Durban.
What you're looking at
Centred on the town of St Lucia, iSimangaliso protects the country's largest estuarine lake system alongside dunes, coastal forest, and offshore coral reefs. It's famous for hippos and crocodiles (often seen from St Lucia itself), plus turtles that nest on the beaches, whales offshore in season, and superb birdlife. Cape Vidal and Sodwana Bay are the standout beach and snorkelling/diving spots.
Visiting as a resident
St Lucia (about 3 hours from Durban) is the main base, with restaurants and guesthouses. From there you can take estuary boat cruises to see hippos, drive to Cape Vidal for beach and game, or head north to Sodwana for diving. A normal car reaches the main areas; some tracks need higher clearance.
