What you're looking at
The park covers about 550 km² within the Pilanesberg, an eroded alkaline volcanic complex over a billion years old, giving it a distinctive ring of hills. Stocked in the late 1970s through the landmark "Operation Genesis" relocation, it now holds the Big Five — lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino — plus cheetah and around 360 bird species. Being malaria-free and close to the city makes it especially popular with families.
Visiting as a resident
It's roughly a 2–2.5 hour drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria via the N4 toward Rustenburg. You can self-drive the network of good roads, join open-vehicle guided drives, or even take a hot-air balloon. There are day-visitor entry fees plus a range of lodges and camps if you stay over. Combine it easily with Sun City next door.
