Table Mountain is Cape Town's defining landmark — the flat-topped mountain that towers over the city and, for expats, becomes the backdrop to daily life. Whether you ride up or hike, it's the first thing you'll want to do and the sight you'll keep coming back to.
What you're looking at
Rising about 1,084 m over the city, Table Mountain is the centrepiece of Table Mountain National Park and part of the UNESCO-listed Cape Floral Region, with over 2,000 plant species plus its own dassies and sunbirds. It's one of the New7Wonders of Nature. From the top you look out over the city, Table Bay, Robben Island, and the Twelve Apostles.
Visiting as a resident
The easy way up is the rotating aerial cableway (about a five-minute ride); the classic hike is Platteklip Gorge (a steep 1.5–2.5 hours), with tougher routes like India Venster and Skeleton Gorge for the experienced. Weather changes fast — the cableway closes in high wind or cloud (the "tablecloth"), so go on a clear, calm day and check conditions first.
