The Tizi n'Test is one of Morocco's most dramatic drives — a narrow, twisting High Atlas road that climbs to around 2,100 m on the old route from Marrakech toward Taroudant and the Souss plains. For expats who like a road trip, it's a spectacular (and demanding) day behind the wheel.
What you're looking at
The pass follows the N'Fis valley up through Berber villages and past ancient kasbahs before topping out with huge views over the mountains and, on a clear day, down toward the Souss. Near the road stands the 12th-century Tin Mal Mosque, one of the few Moroccan mosques non-Muslims could enter — though note it was badly damaged in the 2023 earthquake and may be closed or under restoration.
Driving it as a resident
This is a full-day drive, not a quick hop: Marrakech to Taroudant this way is roughly 220 km and takes 5–6 hours with stops, on a genuinely narrow, cliff-edge road. Take it slowly, and consider doing it one-way as part of a loop with the higher Tizi n'Tichka pass.
Good to know
- Best in spring and autumn; avoid winter snow and ice at the top.
- The road is narrow with sheer drops — not for nervous drivers.
- Fuel up and carry water; services are sparse.
- Check on Tin Mal Mosque's status before counting on a visit.
