The Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn are South Africa's best-known cave system — a huge complex of limestone chambers, dripstone, and towering formations under the Swartberg mountains. For expats it's the star attraction of the Little Karoo and an easy add-on to a Garden Route trip.
What you're looking at
Formed over millions of years and known since the late 1700s, the caves are seen only on guided tours. The Standard Tour (about an hour) is an easy walk through the big show chambers and their stalactites and stalagmites; the Adventure Tour (about 90 minutes) squeezes through tight passages like the Devil's Chimney and isn't for the claustrophobic or unfit. Both are led by guides who keep the fragile formations protected.
Visiting as a resident
The caves are about 30 km from Oudtshoorn, in the Little Karoo just over the mountains from the Garden Route. Book tours online in peak season and wear grippy shoes. Combine it with Oudtshoorn's ostrich farms and the dramatic Swartberg Pass.
