Plettenberg Bay ("Plett") is one of the Garden Route's most popular beach towns — a relaxed coastal spot on South Africa's south coast known for its beaches, whales, and outdoor life. For expats it's a favourite holiday and second-home base, and an easy stop on any Garden Route trip.
What you're looking at
Plett sits between the mountains and the Indian Ocean, with long swimming beaches (Central, Robberg, Lookout), the dramatic Robberg Nature Reserve and its coastal hike, and a lagoon and estuaries behind the town. It's a hub for whale and dolphin watching (roughly June–November), plus wildlife sanctuaries nearby and the Bloukrans Bridge bungee — the world's highest commercial bridge jump — up the road.
Visiting as a resident
It's about 210 km from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and around 600 km (6–7 hours) from Cape Town on the N2, so most people drive as part of a Garden Route road trip; there's also a small airport. A car is essential for exploring the coast and reserves.

- Peak season is the South African summer (Nov–Mar) — book well ahead.
- For whales and quieter beaches, come in winter/spring.
- It's a driving destination; public transport is minimal.
- Easy to combine with Knysna and Tsitsikamma nearby.
