Robberg Nature Reserve is the Garden Route's best coastal walk — a rocky peninsula just outside Plettenberg Bay with cliffs, beaches, and a big Cape fur seal colony. For expats on this coast it's a favourite weekend hike and one of the region's genuine highlights.
What you're looking at
"Robberg" means "seal mountain," and the reserve lives up to it: a dramatic headland with three looping trails — the short Gap (about 2 km/45 min), the mid-length Witsand loop (~5.5 km), and the full Point circuit (~9 km, 3–4 hours) out to the tip. Along the way you get sweeping ocean views, the sandy tombolo linking "the Island," and, in season (roughly June–November), whales offshore.
Visiting as a resident
It's a short drive from Plettenberg Bay and needs a car. Pay the small conservation entry fee, wear proper shoes (parts are rocky and exposed), and start early with water and sun cover. The full Point circuit is a proper half-day hike — check the tide for the tombolo section.

- Wear grippy shoes — the rock can be slippery and uneven.
- Time the tombolo/beach section with the tide.
- Best whale-watching is roughly June–November.
- No dogs; it's a protected reserve.
